Buying a used car is a great way to get a good deal on a car without putting a ton of money down up front. But there are a lot of resources you need to know before you buy.
Since the housing market and economy are still rocky, it can be difficult to find a good deal on a used car, even if you’re just shopping around for a bit of a back-up car. With a little research, you can find a good deal on a used car and avoid a headache later.
Here’s a list of great resources for buying a used car, from online used car listings to car buyers forums to how to find cheap financing.
Online Used Car Listings
I recommend using only online resources for buying a used car. They’re easy to access and most are free.
Craigslist
Craigslist is a great resource for used car listings. For example, if you’re in a larger city, you can get a good used car for under $3,000. The downside to using Craigslist for buying a used car is that you need to be prepared to spend some time driving around to look for a car.
Cars.com
The Cars.com car search engine allows you to narrow down your search by price, options, year and mileage, and so on. You can also search by dealer and location.
All used car listings on the site are free, but you need to register. You can also view used car ads by email, although you need to pay $24.99 a year for the service.
Kelley Blue Book
The Kelley Blue Book is one of the most trusted sources for car pricing. The KBB is a great resource for researching the value of used cars. You can check out the KBB used car listings here.
Chevrolet, Ford and GMC Pricing
While the KBB is good at providing the value of used cars in san diego it can be hard to find information on specific cars. You can check out the KBB’s pricing for Chevrolet, Ford and GMC cars here.
The KBB also has a used car search engine, which you can use to find specific cars by make, model, and year.
Edmunds.com
Edmunds has a great site for searching and buying used cars, and is one of my favorite sources for used cars.
Edmunds lists all new and used cars, along with their prices, features and specs. Edmunds also provides a great price search tool that allows you to search by zip code, mileage, options, price and more.
If you’re shopping for a specific make and model of car, you can go to Edmunds and search by make and model, or select a state and search for only cars from that state.
UsedCarFinder.com
This site provides a way to find used cars and compare prices from dealers all over the country. You can narrow your search by make, model, year and mileage.
UsedCarFinder also has a great search engine to help you find cars by make, model and year. You can even search for specific models, such as the Toyota Corolla.
